Adelaide Park waste water treatment plant commissioned

HARARE – Local Government, Public Works and National Housing deputy minister, Jenifer Mhlanga yesterday commissioned the first phase of a waste water treatment plant valued at $480 000 in Adelaide Park, Epworth.

Constructed through a partnership between Shelter Zimbabwe and Epworth Local Board this first phase of the sewer reticulation plant has a capacity of 0,4 mega-litres which is enough to process effluent from 730 units (houses).

Started 2 years ago this project is one of Shelter Zimbabwe’s (developers of residential stands) major schemes following  the construction of Lafarge’s  85 employee houses in partnership with National Building Society(NBS) and other service providers under the theme “Partnering to provide affordable housing”.

Speaking on the sidelines of the commissioning ceremony yesterday, Deputy Minister of local government, public works and national housing Jennifer Mhlanga said the plant is set to be completed by 2020 with a full capacity to process waste from 2630 households.

“On completion the plant will have a total capacity of 1, 3 megalitres enough to process effluent for 2630 stands in Adelaide Park and to date 100 out 700 households serviced stands are already discharging to the plant with the remaining capacity of the plant with the remaining capacity of the to be completed by 2020,” said Mrs Mhlanga.

Furthermore Shelter Zimbabwe board chairman Abraham Maguchu said the plant which is the first of its kind in Adelaide and country as a whole is environmentally friendly as water from the treatment plant can be used for other sustainable projects.

“We are happy to confirm that the process went through Environment management agency inspections and tests of the effluent has achieved blue class which denotes that effluent is safe and sustainable for irrigation purposes

“As shelter Zimbabwe we acknowledge the World Habitat theme for 2018 “Municipal Solid Waste Management” and we offer this technology to all your local authorities, urban and rural schools churches and factories,” he said.
