Life is short, so why live a lie? Life is too short; why not make the most of it? Life is short, why not do what you enjoy the most?

I was invited to speak for one corporate, and asked the participants, “what would you do with your life if you are told you have one year to live?”

The answers that came were quite interesting.

One person told me something very interesting in response —  “I would do something that I am passionate about?”

This maybe the same answer that you can give. The truth is that many people are not living; they are busy trying to make a living.

The cycle never ends. You might be trapped in this routine, but this week I want to challenge you to start living. I want to challenge you to release the person in you, and let the world see him or her.

The talented violinist

An enchanting story is told about the talented violinist Fritz Kreisler how he once came across a beautiful instrument he wanted to acquire.

When he finally raised the money for the violin, he returned to buy it and learned that it had already been sold to a collector.

He went to the new owner’s home in order to try to persuade him to sell the violin. But the collector said it was one of his prized possessions and he could not let it go.

The disappointed Kreisler turned to leave, but then asked a favour. “May I play the instrument once more before it is consigned to silence?”

Permission was granted and the great musician began to play. The violin sang out a quality of music so beautiful that the collector himself could only listen in wonderment.

“I have no right to keep that to myself,” he said after the musician finished.

“The violin is yours, Mr Kreisler. Take it into the world, and let people hear it.”

Touching story! This is what often happens to many people. We set goals for our lives, and sometimes the reality of achieving these goals appear like a pipe-dream.

For Mr Kreisler, the purchase of the violin by someone was the greatest disappointment because the violin is all that he ever wanted in his life.

Disappointments are real, and they will always be there in life. I know you might have been disappointed in your life; it may be in a relationship, marriage, family, business.

I want you to take the next step below.

Do not give up

There is no glory in giving up. There is glory in finishing the race. Imagine what would have happened to the young violinist if he had decided to just give up when he was told that the violin had been purchased by a collector.

He decided to give himself a chance, by trying to approach the new owner and try to negotiate something with him.  This he did, and this is what you need to learn.

Do not always close the door on yourself. Try, and try harder.

Take a risk

A life spent without taking risks, is a life wasted. Kreisler decided to take one risk, asking to play the violin.

From the look of things, there was no way he was going to get the violin. He decided to take a leap and ask for a chance to play the violin.

He gave himself the chance to touch and feel what he always dreamt of. Sometimes you need to learn to take these risks.

There is no guarantee that you will always succeed, but that is the nature of risk, it’s that element of uncertainty that makes it worthwhile. If he had been declined, that would have been the end, but imagine what happened when he was given the opportunity.

Seize the moment

This is what you need to do, seize the moment and make the most of it. Give it your best. Deep inside the young violinist was amazing music, which was trapped in him for some time, and what the opportunity gave him was an opportunity to show what was in him.

There is no one who is immune to excellence. The world looks and rewards excellence. The word will create a road to excellence.

There is no one who wants to be associated with mediocrity; everyone wants to be associated with excellence. This is what the young man in the above story did, and earned himself the violin.

Help someone realise their dream

We live in selfish times.  It is estimated that over 1 billion selfies are taken every day. This gives you an idea of how much the focus is on the “self”.

The collector was faced with the same scenario where, he could just have kept the violin, and condemned it to eternal silence.

The collector was just concerned with collecting the violin and not using it. Someone came, who was passionate about the violin, and was able to play it.

Give other people a chance in life to show you what they are able to do. I have taken several people on my speaking engagements just to train them on the art of speaking.

I am not going to be here forever, I need to make myself replaceable. This however starts, with me empowering other people who are gifted but might not have access to the opportunities that I have.

Daily life presents us with opportunities to make a difference, do not let the opportunity go, touch and inspire someone.

Join me on Star FM on Wednesdays (09:30am-10:00am) for some moments of inspiration on the Breeze with Tariro “Mai Judah”.
