Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson admits he’s apologised to Harry Maguire for questioning Manchester United’s £80 million move for the England international.

Merson described the fee as “ridiculous” and said Maguire would struggle at Old Trafford because he wouldn’t be able to “amp” on the edge of his box, like he supposedly did at Leicester City.

The former Arsenal midfielder said he saw similarities with former Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson, who struggled once he left St Andrews.  However, Merson has performed a u-turn on those comments following Maguire’s Man of the Match display against Chelsea on Sunday and he admits he was too critical.

Maguire trained with his new team-mates just three times before making his debut “I thought I was very critical of him (Maguire) on Saturday if I’m being honest, on Soccer Saturday,” said Merson.

“I tried to get hold of him today, I’ll talk to him tomorrow, he text me back. I thought I was a bit critical if I’m being honest.” — Skysports.
