Of tough holes, broken dreams Greg Bentley

After Greg Bentley powered to the top of the leader-board on Tuesday at the BET Glendower tournament in South Africa, the Zimbabwean golfer admitted that the course is one of the most difficult.

Bentley emerged from the first round with a seven-under-par 65.

He didn’t single out a certain hole but his bogey on 12 affected what could have been a perfect display.

It brings to the fore the issue of tough holes at certain golf courses that can destroy dreams.

“You’ve got to bring your A-game on a course like this. I mean, they don’t host the BMW SA Open here for nothing. This is a tough track and I am happy to finish the way I did.

“You know it’s been a while since I have been among the leaders so it feels good to go into the final round up there at the top,” he was quoted by Sunshine Tour as saying.

Bentley has a chance of doing well if he can again go against the grain at the Vodacom Origins of Golf end of this month.

Every golfer — both professionals and amateurs are counted — will always find a course or hole that makes life tough

Top golfer Dustin Johnson was also forced to conclude that the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is not for the faint hearted.

“I feel like I’m starting to play this golf course a little bit better. But this golf course is tough. You’ve got to have all facets of your game working if you want to contend around here . . . You’ve got to hit all kinds of different shots, every club in your bag, and you’ve got to really control your golf ball,” he was quoted by US TODAY this year.

The challenge though seems necessary and makes the game unpredictable and exciting.

Among some of the toughest holes, the Legend Golf and Safari Club in South Africa is known for its notorious 19th, set up high on Hanglin Mountain.

The hole can only be accessed by jumping on a helicopter to reach the tee which will be about 400m above the green.

This course in South Africa was at one point regarded as one of the top ten toughest holes in the world.

Some of the toughest in the world include those that feature mountains, hidden bunkers and gale face winds.

And away from Africa, the Cypress Point Club 16th hole in California is in the limelight for that same reason.

The “approximately 230-yard carry over” the Pacific Ocean is said to be difficult enough and certain to shutter dreams. The “extra variable of strong crosswinds” makes it tougher, according to The Mirror.
