If you pay the  slightest attention to what people wear in the office, you should have surely noticed over the years that men’s business attire has changed.

Business attire refers to the clothing that employees wear to work. Depending on the workplace, various levels of the formality of business attire are expected and it has become the norm.

The dress code range from traditional and formal to smart casual, business casual and casual.

Basically, a business professional attire starts with a suit, a shirt, a tie and a pair of dress shoes. It’s that simple.

Once you have the basics taken care of, you can start to work with accessories to complete your look: a belt, a dressy watch and cufflinks.

Your business dress needs are partially going to be determined by professions like lawyers, teachers, and journalists among others.

Your clothes should show the level of respect that you have for yourself. People do judge you by your appearance.

While trends cannot be ignored, there is also something to be said for putting time and effort into your appearance, and the confidence and respect that come with showing your best self to the world.

Oh, but how fashion standards for men have fallen since those days.

Complaints have been thrown all over due to men’s untidy looks, poor colour combinations, suit selections, mix and matches, bad accessory combinations.

It’s a fact that one should draw attention to oneself by the quality and the value of the work or service provided, not by the flashiness of your business attire.

So why don’t more guys dress better?

Brighton Chikwiri, a 4May official said men are generally bad dressers because they are not fashion conscious but it’s now a thing of the past because what you see is what you get and for people to accept you, you need to look presentable.

“Generally men fashion statements or clothes are expensive but there comes a time and point where one needs to have a best attire in the wardrobe including a bright coloured shirt,” he said

Chikwiri said the power of style is illustrated, perversely by the fact that it’s the fear of dressing well that drives many men to be slobs.

“The reality is that dressing well helps us in our personal, family and business lives, in fact it reflects self-confidence and success.

“Style needs not be costly, so there is no excuse for it. You need to dress for success thus you should invest your money in a great suit. I know most men fear wearing colours but that’s the in-thing as it not only compliments the look but the atmosphere. These days it is all about the pocket square and lapel pin even at work it boost confidence. A gentleman should have three ties, red , black and blue with these you won’t go wrong on any look,” Chikwiri added.

You’ve undoubtedly noticed around you a few men who don’t seem to know how to dress properly for the office.

It is important to know how to wear professional business attire, you know how important it is to dress for the part. Whether it is for an interview, your first day in a new job, or to upgrade your wardrobe as your career progresses, your professional business look is a reflection of how much you care about your career.

Expensive clothes

One thing out of the way first: dressing for the office doesn’t have to be expensive. Remember there’s a dignity to dressing your age that cuts both ways.

Bad size options

Always look for the right fit. There is nothing more saddening than seeing a man pulling out the right style with the wrong fit. It will completely ruin your efforts if your clothes are overly tight and uncomfortable or too baggy and sloppy. If you invest time defining your style, make sure that the execution is right.

Don’t kid around with the fit of your good business clothes. Get them tailored specifically to you, always, and be honest about the measurements.

Keep it simple

Business attire is important because it sends messages about you — fairly or unfairly — to customers, clients, bosses, company executives, and co-workers. It is important to Stick to basic styles like the two-button, single-breasted, business suit in a dark solid.

But, do understand, the total impression that you make on your colleagues and bosses has implications for how you are viewed in your workplace—for better or for worse.

Career success and advancement should be more important than your need to express your individual, quirky personality at work.

Moderate your colours

As one ages and settle a bit in life one would want to tone it down a notch.

That doesn’t mean you should stop wearing a variety of colours. In fact, a professional man benefits from a wardrobe made up of many different colours, but the colours shouldn’t be the focus of the outfit.

Be realistic about fitting

At the professional age the fit of your clothes is a major sign of success (or failure). Someone in a slumped suit, or a sports jacket that’s too short for his arms, is someone who looks like he can’t afford or doesn’t care to look better.

Neither one is going to inspire much confidence in your friends and peers.

You’re better off owning less clothes that fit better than a lot of clothes that fit okay. Prioritise getting everything in your business wardrobe looking sharp and feeling comfortable over adding items to the closet.

Carefully choose shoes

Another critical element of your professional business attire is a pair of dress shoes.

Employees who want to fit well in their workplace, wear the standard clothing that is expected, and often dictated by a written dress code.

But, you don’t need an official dress code to understand what constitutes appropriate business attire in your workplace.
