HARARE – The Minister of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Prisca Mupfumira is today meeting with stakeholders in the hospitality industry to map out strategies to boost both international and domestic arrivals in the resort town of Kariba.
Kariba which houses the world’s largest man-made lake has over the years been on a decline of tourist arrivals owing to a myriad of challenges being experienced in the tourism industry as a whole.
The subdue number of tourist arrival and lack of viability saw the national carrier, Air Zimbabwe, suspending its flights connecting Kariba with Harare and Victoria Falls.
In a statement today the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality said Kariba will be developed through an aggressive marketing strategy.
“Kariba a designated tourism development zone which will be awakened speedily as the new thrust seeks to dedicate energy on development. This will be done and implemented alongside a new, robust and aggressive marketing strategy,” read part of the statement.
The development comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) is currently engaged in talks with a number of investors who are keen on injecting significant amounts of capital into various projects across the country`s tourism sector, as the industry regulator intensifies efforts to boost arrivals this year.
ZTA is projecting a growth in tourist arrivals for the year 2019 from the 2.7 million (the largest amount of arrivals received in the last 19 years) arrivals generated in the year last year.
Over the years the sector was affected by turbulent times that rocked the economy, which resulted in production input costs, especially of goods that are required to sustain operating costs of business.
This was compounded by shortage of essential commodities and other less essential commodities, but the situation has since stabilized with availability of goods drastically improving.
