When a tiger rises again . . . Our own Cayeux tries to get back to the top

It is a week former world number one Tiger Woods has stayed true to George Custer’s never say die spirit.

“It’s not how many times you get knocked down that count, it’s how many times you get back up.”

It must have been refreshing for Tiger’s fans to see him line up a putt with much calmness at the Hero World Challenge pro-am at Albany. Perhaps golf.com best summarised the return of this legend, who last year tried to get up and was “knocked down” by a back injury.

“Tiger Woods eagled the par-4 seventh hole at the Hero World Challenge pro-am in the Bahamas, and fans had a hard time keeping their cool.

In response to the PGA Tour’s clip of Woods’s 20 foot putt, ecstatic, hyperventilating fans clogged Twitter with “He’s Back” memes, golf.com wrote. Yes, just a glimpse tells you it is the legend himself. And the hype it has created shows even a half-baked Tiger, with an eagle here and there, could appease his fans.

What would disappoint is if this was a just a dummy. Around this time last year, the 14-time major champions was back again and his return created a lot of excitement. A few months after his return, he pulled out of the Dubai Desert Classic, much to the disappointment of his followers. While Tiger is trying to stay on his feet, Zimbabwe’s Marc Cayeux has been up for some time now but trying to get back to the top. Cayeux is part of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at Heritage Golf Club, a tournament set for 30 November to 3 December.

Other Zimbabweans taking part include Mark Williams and Scott Vincent. Cayeux have had some pretty decent performances of late, including in the Sunshine Tour. And whatever set-backs he has faced in his career, seem to be a thing of the past. The challenge will only be how to get back to the top. AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open offers him that chance, and without much hype around him, he has no pressure. The Zimbabwean could borrow from one of the top players, Louis Oosthuizen, who is taking a relaxed approach.

“It’s a different vibe this week – the resort is such a nice spot and everyone is having such a good time,” Oosthuizen was quoted by European Tour.

“A lot of people have got their families here and it’s a very relaxed week. By Thursday it’s all about the golf but it’s nice to spend a bit of time with the kids round the pool and enjoy the views.”
