HARARE – Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC) commissioners on Thursday tendered their resignations with immediate effect, a senior government official has said.
In a statement, chief secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said all the anti-corruption commissioners had gone on leave pending finalisation of their terminal benefits.
“His Excellency the President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accepted the resignation of the Chairman of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, Dr Job Whabira, with effect from 31 January 2019.
“Furthermore, His Excellency, the President accepts the resignation of the rest of the ZACC commissioners with effect from 31 January 2019,” he said.
Dr Sibanda said in the interim, President Mnangagwa would appoint a new ZACC chairperson shortly.
“In the meantime His Excellency the President will shortly appoint a new Chairman in terms of section 254 (1a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (No. 20), and request for nominees from the Committee on Standing Rules and Orders of Parliament, in terms of Section 254 (2) of the Constitution towards the appointment of the rest of the Commissioners,” he said.
He said President Mnangagwa commended the ZACC team for working to rid the country of corruption.
President Mnangagwa has promised to crack down on endemic corruption in the country, blamed partly for stalling economic growth and development.
A 2015 report by a global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, ranked Zimbabwe 150 out of 168 countries in terms of graft. – New Ziana
