The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) are pleased with the season opener, the historic Dugmore Trophy held last weekend and promises upward growth and excitement on their 2019 official calendar which will see local golfers featuring in a number of regional and international tournaments.

Bracing for a busy 2019, the ZGA released a bumper schedule with over 32 national and international competitions.

The season opener was held at the country’s oldest golf course, the Bulawayo Golf Club and had 41 players in the Dugmore Trophy and 27 players on the Fellowship Trophy.

Zimbabwe’s rising amateur golfer, Tafara Mpofu, 20, battled it out with some top amateur golfers in the country to book the top slot, with 75 points.

The tournament was led by Gerald Schwabane in round one with a fantastic gross score of 69 with local boy Barry Painting second at level par 72.

Mpofu, a Chapman-based golfer, challenged on second round with a fantastic 66, followed by a third round score of 75 to win the trophy.

ZGA golf development officer, Boniface Chigorimbo said the Dugmore Trophy has national points, world points and Namibia, Windhoek Lager first qualifier of the year and were looking forward to a competitive tournaments.

“One look at our 2019 season opener, shows the breadth of exciting events and we are looking forward to competitive tournament that will occur locally and regionally.

“The calendar tee-off with the Dugmore Trophy and everything went according to plan in Bulawayo. We have a lot of talent among our golfers and I have no doubt that the year will continue on upward trend. Some of our tournaments have national points, world points and we encourage golfers to prepare adequately,” he said.

After the Dugmore Trophy, The Filande tournament is the next big tournament, which usually features provincial teams in a match play contest follows.

It tees off on February 19 and ends two days later.

March proves to be busiest month and local amateur golfers will take part in the Mawegu Amateur Champion, Julius Robinson Amateur and Masvingo Amateur to be played in Windhoek, Sanlam Amateur in South Africa

The major highlight on this year’s calendar will no doubt be the revived Zimbabwe Open which returned to the local calendar in 2010 having been off the radar for a decade.

Considered as the jewel in the crown of professional golf in the country, the Zimbabwe Open, which is being bankrolled by a number of local corporates and is the richest professional golf event locally.

According to the schedule released the Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned Zimbabwe Open that will run from April 15-21.

May, June, July August are some of the busiest months, with three tournaments on cards.

For local amateurs regional tournaments are lined up starting with the Sanlam South African Amateur next month and the prestigious All Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship to be held in Mauritius from October 13-19.
