HARARE – Government plans to build 19 dams across Zimbabwe to improve water supply in urban, agricultural and industrial areas, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Reliable and adequate water supply infrastructure is crucial in the revival of local industry and the agriculture sector, for example.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the water infrastructure projects which were on the cards included the Gwayi-Shangani dam, the Bindura dam and the long delayed Matabeleland Zambezi Water supply project.
Other projects included construction of the Sengwa dam and the rehabilitation of the Harare water supply system.
“A tender was flighted on the 10th of March 2019 by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement; the tender will close on the 3rd of May 2019 and is soliciting for potential investors for the development of 19 large dams and water supply projects under Build Own Operate Transfer arrangement,” she said.
“The water supply infrastructure development projects upon completion will augment water supply for urban, industrial and agricultural areas.”
Meanwhile, Mutsvangwa said government was also pursuing other crucial infrastructure projects.
To that end, she said government had directed the immediate commencement of three road construction projects which were awarded to various companies.
The three, to be undertaken under Public Private Partnerships, include the Mvurwi-Guruve-Kanyemba, Beit Bridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls and the Gweru-Buchwa-Rutenga roads.
“Cabinet directed that due to the urgency of the road projects, investors should immediately commence works of road projects assigned to them,” she said.
On its part, government has committed to spend at least $1 billion on road construction and rehabilitation under the road development programme. – New Ziana
